Tarakan

Tarakan, I'm stay in this town since 2008, when I was entered in junior high school  in SMPN 2 Tarakan.

Now, I'll tell you everything 'bout Tarakan.

Tarakan island looks very small than other city

Tarakan, located on Tarakan Island is one of the major cities in eastern Borneo, just across the border from Sabah, Malaysia. Once a major oil producing region during colonial period, Tarakan had great strategic importance during the Pacific War and was among the first Japanese targets early in the war.

The name of Tarakan come from Tidung language: Tarak (meeting place) and ngakan (to eat); thus Tarakan was originally meeting place for sailor and trader in Tidung area to eat, rest and trade their catch.

The city has a total area of ​​657.33 km ² and in accordance with the Civil Registry Agency data for Population and Family Planning in 2010 Tarakan City has a population of 193,069 inhabitants. In addition, the city also has a multi-ethnic population from other parts of Indonesia, such as Bugis, Javanese and Chinese Indonesian. The majority of the population is Muslim, with a minority of Christian and other religions. Relations between ethnic groups are generally peaceful, but Tarakan had witnessed deadly clashes in the 2010 Tarakan riot (just forget it !!) 

The city was once a leading oil producer in Dutch East Indies; however now oil only comprises 6% of the total Tarakan economy. The economy is now dominated by fisheries and forest products.

• Izzah Bayt Islamic Center, Village Four, Tarakan East is the largest mosque in the northern part of East Kalimantan. Islamic Center is located approximately 5 miles from downtown.
